Follow-up Research Description

Background

The Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) will conduct a research project as a follow-up to the two VEF research reports: (1) Observations on Undergraduate Education in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Physics at Select Universities in Vietnam, published in August 2006; and (2) Observations on the Current Status of Education in the Agricultural Sciences in Vietnam, published inJanuary 2007. The follow-up research will take place in late July 2013. The project will continue the study on how new models and approaches to undergraduate education can contribute to increased effectiveness in teaching and learning in the sciences, engineering, and technology in Vietnam, and will seek to update the results of the earlier studies. The follow-up research will also include graduate education. VEF provides organizational and logistical support, the final written reports, and funding for the U.S. researchers, who are volunteering their time, and for the VEF support team.

Purpose

The purpose of this follow-up research project is two-fold: (a) to review the strengths and challenges in undergraduate and graduate education in Vietnam in the fields of agricultural sciences (AS), civil engineering (CE), computer science (CS), electrical engineering (EE), environmental sciences (ES), physics (P), and transport and communications(TC) as compared with those, if any, in the previous two reports; and (b) to develop recommendations for innovation and improvement that will enhance the quality of education in these fields in Vietnam to make them more competitive at the regional and international levels.

Organizations and Individuals to be Interviewed

Research Team

U.S. experts: Experts in the subject areas of AS, CE, CS, EE, ES, P, and TC, and in development and evaluation, including those who participated in the two previous research reports. Senior level VEF staff will be involved in organizing and managing the project as well as compiling the results.

Research Design

As this is a qualitative research study, the data includes online and other archival documents, surveys, interviews, observations, and follow-up correspondence.
